Dr Kristian Sørensen
Specialist Plastic Surgeon
Dr Sørensen is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon and is registered as a Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Australia. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Glasgow with Honours in 2000. He spent the next five years in Glasgow, undertaking Basic Surgical Training (BST), during which he received his Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004.
He embarked on his career in Plastic Surgery by working as the Trauma Fellow in the world renowned Canniesburn Plastic Surgery unit in Glasgow, before moving to Durham, in the North East of England, to undertake a period of research. After two years, he was appointed to the Higher Surgical Training (HST) scheme for Plastic Surgery in the North East of England. The Specialty Training scheme included a range of subspecialties within Plastic Surgery and he received comprehensive and broad training between 2007 and 2013. During this time, he passed his Fellowship exam in Plastic Surgery (FRCS) in 2012 and received his specialist accreditation from the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2013. After his completed training, he undertook further subspecialist training Fellowships:
• A National Interface Fellowship in Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery.
• A highly competitive Aesthetic Fellowship with Mr. Barry Jones in London.
• A Head and Neck Fellowship at the internationally reputed St Andrew’s Unit for Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford, Essex.
Dr Sørensen was appointed a locum Consultant in Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford before taking up a permanent post at the University Hospital North Durham in September 2014. In 2015, he relocated with his family to Oslo, Norway, a return to his origins after 20 years of living in the UK. He was appointed a Consultant at the National Hospital (Rikshospitalet), which is the largest Plastic Surgery Department in Norway. His workload comprised a wide range of elective and trauma cases, including congenital malformations.
After receiving an offer to come to Cairns, Dr Sørensen moved here in February 2018, taking up the position of a Staff Specialist at Cairns Hospital. He obtained his Fellowship (FRACS) in 2020 and is a fully qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Australia, in addition to being on the specialist register in the UK and Norway.
Dr Sørensen has an academic appointment as Adjunct Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, teaching medical students and junior doctors as part of his clinical practice.
Dr Sørensen was an active swimmer and represented Norway at the European Junior Championships and Nordic Junior Championships before he embarked on his medical career. He was the Norwegian Junior Champion on multiple occasions and was also fortunate to be awarded a University Blue by the University of Glasgow.
