About us

Overview

Welcome to FNQ Plastic Surgery, where we are dedicated to providing exceptional cosmetic and reconstructive surgical solutions. Our team at the practice is led by two highly qualified doctors with a wealth of experience in both surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Dr Kristian Sørensen, our Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive, and Cosmetic Surgeon, has extensive experience in plastic surgery and has undergone comprehensive training in various subspecialties. He has been practising plastic surgery in Australia since 2018 and is a fully qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Australia, as well as on the specialist register in the UK and Norway.

Dr Sorrel Sørensen, our specialist in non-surgical procedures, has a background in General Practice having initially pursued training in Ophthalmology. She is on the specialist register for General Practice in Australia, UK and Norway. Her interest in aesthetics started in 2001 during Ophthalmology training, and she has attended advanced-level training in all aspects of non-surgical based facial rejuvenation and general aesthetics, including injectables, micro-sclerotherapy, microdermabrasion, medical grade micro-needling and threading. Her training also includes medical-grade chemical peels and laser; however, the FNQ sunshine does not lend itself to these facial treatments.

Dr Sørensen is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon and is registered as a Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Australia. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Glasgow with Honours in 2000. He spent the next five years in Glasgow, undertaking Basic Surgical Training (BST), during which he received his Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004.

He embarked on his career in Plastic Surgery by working as the Trauma Fellow in the world renowned Canniesburn Plastic Surgery unit in Glasgow, before moving to Durham, in the North East of England, to undertake a period of research. After two years, he was appointed to the Higher Surgical Training (HST) scheme for Plastic Surgery in the North East of England. The Specialty Training scheme included a range of subspecialties within Plastic Surgery and he received comprehensive and broad training between 2007 and 2013. During this time, he passed his Fellowship exam in Plastic Surgery (FRCS) in 2012 and received his specialist accreditation from the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2013. After his completed training, he undertook further subspecialist training Fellowships:

• A National Interface Fellowship in Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery.

• A Head and Neck Fellowship at the internationally reputed St Andrew’s Unit for Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford, Essex.

Dr Sørensen was appointed a locum Consultant in Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford before taking up a permanent post at the University Hospital North Durham in September 2014. In 2015, he relocated with his family to Oslo, Norway, a return to his origins after 20 years of living in the UK. He was appointed a Consultant at the National Hospital (Rikshospitalet), which is the largest Plastic Surgery Department in Norway. His workload comprised a wide range of elective and trauma cases, including congenital malformations.

After receiving an offer to come to Cairns, Dr Sørensen moved here in February 2018, taking up the position of a Staff Specialist at Cairns Hospital. He obtained his Fellowship (FRACS) in 2020 and is a fully qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Australia, in addition to being on the specialist register in the UK and Norway.

Dr Sørensen has an academic appointment as Adjunct Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, teaching medical students and junior doctors as part of his clinical practice.

Dr Sørensen was an active swimmer and represented Norway at the European Junior Championships and Nordic Junior Championships before he embarked on his medical career. PG Cert in Management of Drug Misuse in Primary Care (1&2)

Dr Sorrel Sørensen graduated from Glasgow University, Scotland in 1998 and initially directed her training toward Ophthalmology, which she has continued to enjoy as a field of interest in General Practice. She completed the London Royal College Specialist examinations in General Practice in 2004, followed by diplomas in Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She took time out of General Practice and trained in hospice-based Palliative Care to further expand her experience in managing patients in the community and continued to work as a regular doctor in the Urgent Care General Practice setting in the local hospital.

For the final 3 years of her time in UK, she diverted most of her working week toward the secure environment and substance misuse management, completing the Postgraduate Certificates in this subspecialty. She worked across the range of Her Majesty’s high and medium security prisons in the North East of England.

Sorrel’s interest in aesthetics began during her Ophthalmology training, and over the next 15 years, she attended specialist courses and training in all aspects of facial rejuvenation and general aesthetics, including injectables, micro-sclerotherapy, microdermabrasion, medical grade micro-needling and threading. Her training also includes medical-grade chemical peels and laser; however, the FNQ sunshine does not lend itself to these facial treatments. She worked in one of the largest chains of skin clinics in Britain for several years and continued to combine this with General Practice in the community, prison service and Urgent Care setting.

Sorrel is keen on sport and represented Great Britain in the Junior World Rowing Championships in Barcelona in the 90’s and went on to compete for her university in both rowing and swimming. She met and married her husband, Dr Kristian Sørensen, while at University in Glasgow. They have two teenage children.
